An approach to the study of the fungal deterioration of a classical art material: Mastic varnish Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Romero-Noguera,Julio; López-Miras,María del Mar; Martín-Sánchez,Inés; Ramos-López,José Miguel; Bolívar-Galiano,Fernando.
Mastic, one of the best natural varnishes, is frequently used as protective and finishing layer or as component of oleo-resinous media in paintings, both in the past and currently. However, this resin is affected by complex deterioration processes which can change its characteristics and thus the visual aspect of works of art. The alteration processes caused by radiation have been widely studied, but there is a lack of information on the biodeterioration of this natural product. In this paper, fungi from collections as well as from oil paintings of the Fine Arts Museum of Granada (Spain) were inoculated onto slides covered with mastic. The samples, after an incubation period of 15 days, were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to...

Martinelli,Laira; Rosa,Jessica Miranda; Ferreira,Carolina dos Santos Bragine; Nascimento,Gustavo Marcelo da Luz; Freitas,Mateus Silveira; Pizato,Luiz Carlos; Santos,Wanderson de Oliveira; Pires,Ricardo Francisco; Okura,Mônica Hitomi; Malpass,Geoffroy Roger Pointer; Granato,Ana Claudia.
ABSTRACT: Essential oils are the most important compounds produced during secondary metabolism in aromatic plants. Essential oils are volatile, have characteristic odor and are used as defensive agents by plants. In pepper, it is possible to say that essential oils are the “flavor fingerprint” of each species. In the present article, eight species of pepper were studied in order to extract their essential oils and oleoresins, test their antibacterial and antifungal activities and also to identify the compounds present in the most bioactive samples. Results demonstrated that two essential oils [Pimenta dioica (L.) Merr. and Schinus terebinthifolius] and three oleoresins (Schinus terebinthifolius and Piper nigrum white and black) recorded significant...

Biodeterioration patterns found in dammar resin used as art material Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Romero-Noguera,Julio; Martín-Sánchez,Inés; López-Miras,María del Mar; Ramos-López,José Miguel; Bolívar-Galiano,Fernando.
Since the middle of the XIX century, when dammar became popular in Occident, this natural resin is one of the most used in art painting techniques as final protective coating (varnish) as well as a component of pictorial media. The present work is the first approach to the study of the microbiological biodeterioration of this artistic material, which can seriously affect the appearance and integrity of works of art when bad conservation conditions -especially high humidity levels- take place. 12 microorganisms, fungi and bacteria, came from collection and from oil paintings affected by biodeterioration patterns, were inoculated on test specimens prepared with varnish dammar. These were incubated and analyzed by GC-MS to determine both the microbiological...

Chemical profile of the volátiles of Baccharis salicifolia (Asteraceae) and interaction with Macrodactylus nigripes (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Nieves-Silva,Ericka; Romero-López,Angel A..
Abstract Plant products or substances medíate interactions among organisms from different trophic levels, including phytophagous insects. These interactions have been cited in a chemical-ecology context for species of Coleoptera Melolonthidae. However, there are no previous reports of these interactions among melolonthid beetles species distributed in Mexico and host plants. For the above, the interaction between adults of ‘rose chafer’ Macrodactylus nigripes Bates (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) and ‘seep willow’ shrub Baccharis salicifolia (Ruíz and Pav.) Pers. (Asteraceae) was recorded and the leaves volatiles of seep willow that might be involved in the attraction of these insects were extracted and identified. The sequence of behavior patterns that...

n-alkanes from Paepalanthus Mart. species (Eriocaulaceae) Acta Botanica
Santos,Lourdes Campaner dos; Dokkedal,Anne L.; Sannomiya,Miriam; Soares,Maria Carla Piza; Vilegas,Wagner.
This work presents the study of nonpolar compounds from plants belonging to the genus Paepalanthus Mart. (Eriocaulaceae). Long-chain linear aliphatic hydrocarbons were identified by GC-FID and GC-MS. The results indicate that Paepalanthus subg. Platycaulon species present a very homogenous profile, with carbon chains of n-alkanes ranging from C25 to C31, most samples presenting higher frequencies of C27 and C29 homologues. Paepalanthus subg. Paepalocephalus species may be distinguished from one another by the distribution of main n-alkanes. P. macrocephalus, subsect. Aphorocaulon species, presents alkanes with odd-carbon numbers and P. denudatus and P. polyanthus, Actinocephalus species, present alkanes with quite distinctive profiles, with many shorter...

Oligosaccharides in the honeydew of Coccoidea scale insects: Coccus hesperidum L. and a new Stigmacoccus sp. in Brazil Anais da SEB
Bogo,Amauri; Mantle,Peter.
Analysis of the honeydew from an as yet undescribed, though distinctive, Brazilian Stigmacoccus sp. (near S. asper Hempel) by paper chromatography, Fast atom bombardment (FAB-MS) and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified fructose and glucose as monosaccharides and sucrose, maltose, trehalulose, trehalose and a hexose-hexitol as disaccharides. Erlose and glucosyl erlose have been identified as the tri- and tetra-saccharides in Stigmacoccus sp. and characterised for the first time in scale insects by modern techniques of linkage analysis. The same erlose oligosaccharides were recognised in honeydew of the common scale insect Coccus hesperidum L., together with the pentamer of this series, maltosyl erlose, therefore recognising that specific...

Vieira,Ivo J.C.; Medeiros,Walter L.B.; Monnerat,Cecilia S.; Souza,Jucimar J.; Mathias,Leda; Braz-Filho,Raimundo; Pinto,Angelo C.; Sousa,Priscila M.; Rezende,Claudia M.; Epifanio,Rosângela De A..
The pharmacotherapyfor Alzheimer's disease (AD) includes the use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI). Recent investigations for novel AD therapeutic agents from plants suggested that Tabernaemontana genus is a promising source of novel anticholinesterasic indole alkaloids. In this work two fast screening techniques were combined in order to easily identify novel cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of the less polar alkaloidic fractions obtained from the acid-base extraction of the stalk of T. laeta revealed thirteen monoindole alkaloids, four of them confirmed by co-injection with previously isolated alkaloids. The others were tentatively identified by mass fragmentation analysis. By gas chromatography with...

ABSTRACT: The interest in the use of green tea (Camellia sinensis) (L.) Kuntze (Theaceae) products have increased in the last few years due to its medicinal properties. In the present study, we proposed that headspace solid phase microextraction, in combination with gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometric could be an efficient method to assess the volatile compounds and to ensure the quality control of C. sinensis. We have also compared the anatomical leaf of different commercial green tea samples, analyzed the information in their labels and determined the presence of foreign materials, moisture content, total ashes and microorganisms. Among the 30 analyzed samples, six were identified as C. sinensis according to the anatomical study; 83.4% were...
